David Chung Claims eGolf Tour Florida’s Orange Tree Open Title
By Stewart Moore
Orlando, FL – Former Stanford University star David Chung of Fayetteville, NC entered the final round of eGolf Tour Florida’s Orange Tree Open five shots off the lead, and wound up winning the tournament outright by three shots. Chung, who spent much of his teenage years as one of the world’s top-ranked amateurs, posted seven birdies on a demanding Orange Tree Golf Club layout en route to a final-round 65 and a 7-under 209 total – good for his first win in an eGolf-sanctioned event, and the $7,000 first-place prize.
Through 36 holes of play at Orange Tree, Mother Nature was the runaway leader, as blustery winds made a narrow layout play treacherously close to impossible, with only one player breaking 70 over the first two rounds. The formal leader, however, was David Tepe of Liberty Township, OH, whose opening rounds of 70-72—142 (2-under) put him two shots clear of the field entering Wednesday’s third and final round.
After nine holes on day three, Tepe was still in control of the tournament with one birdie, one bogey and seven pars for an even-par 36 on his outward nine. Still 2-under for the week with nine holes to go, Tepe was two shots in front of Chung, who birdied Nos. 2, 4 and 7 to turn at 3-under 33.
The closing nine, however, took a turn in Chung’s favor, as the former Cardinal standout birdied 10 and 13 to reach 2-under par, suddenly one shot clear of Tepe, who bogeyed the par-3 11th to fall to 1-under par for the tournament.
From that point forward, Chung pulled away from the field, recording birdies on 15 and 16 to jump to 7-under par for the day and 4-under par for the tournament. While Tepe offset his bogey at 11 with a birdie at 15, he was too far back of Chung, who pared his final two holes to post 7-under par on the day.
Chung’s bogey-free 65 in the final round left him at 4-under par for the tournament, and in possession of the Orange Tree Open title, as well as the oversized check for $7,000.
The 23-year-old Chung made a name for himself in 2004, finishing runner-up in the U.S. Junior Amateur at the age of 14. In 2010, he finished runner-up in the U.S. Amateur, in turn earning invitations to compete in the 2011 Masters Tournament and U.S. Open. Later that year, Chung represented the United States in both the Palmer Cup and the Eisenhower Trophy.

Tepe wound up in solo-second place at 1-under 215, earning $2,000 for the week. The former University of Cincinnati golfer, who finished his Bearcat career with medalist honors at the BIG EAST Championship this past spring, was making his first career start in an eGolf-sanctioned event. The four-year letterman qualified for the 2013 NCAA Championship as an individual, in turn becoming the fourth player in UC history to qualify and the first since 1974.
Peter C. Campbell of Windermere, FL, the tournament’s 18-hole leader after opening the week with a 3-under 69, finished in solo-third place at even-par 216. He earned $1,800 for his efforts.
The 30-year-old native of Nova Scotia, Canada had an opportunity to lock up runner-up honors, but double-bogeyed the par-5 16th before recovering with a birdie at the last for a final-round 72.
Campbell, who finished 11th at last week’s Lee Westwood Golf School Open, was making just his second start in an eGolf-sanctioned event since 2011, when he played in nine tournaments on the Charlotte, NC-based eGolf Tour, posting a career-best T3 at the Samanah Classic in Morocco.
Christian Brand of Charleston, WV posted rounds of 72-73-73—218 to finish in solo-fourth place at 2-over par. The former Marshall University golfer earned $1,600 on the week.
The 25-year-old now has five top-15 finishes in his last six starts in eGolf-sanctioned events, including top-5 showings at the eGolf Tour’s River Landing Open and Salisbury Classic, as well as a runner-up at last week’s Lee Westwood Golf School Open on eGolf Tour Florida.
