Eighty-Five (85) eGolf Tour Players Set to Begin Web.com Tour Q-School’s Final Stage at PGA West
By Stewart Moore
Charlotte, NC – The third and final stage of Web.com Tour Q-School begins today at PGA West in La Quinta, CA with 85 current and former eGolf Tour players representing the country’s de facto No. 3 tour, all just six days away from moving up to the Web.com Tour for the 2014 season, and ideally, onto the PGA TOUR from there.
Leading the way at PGA West, where both the Stadium and Jack Nicklaus courses will be used, is 2013 eGolf Tour leading money winner Frank Adams III of Laurinburg, NC.
Adams, the tour’s longest tenured player dating back to the 2003 season, is making his first appearance at final stage after a decade of trying. The seven-time eGolf Tour winner is coming off his best season to date, with wins at the River Run Classic and NorthStone Open helping to secure his spot atop the tour’s money list.
Adams, who played his college golf at East Carolina University, will be joined by a fellow Pirate standout at final stage – Harold Varner III of Gastonia, NC.
Harold Varner III
Varner, who competed in this year’s U.S. Open at Merion Golf Club, earned three runner-up finishes on the eGolf Tour this year en route to a fifth-place finish on the season-ending money list. The former North Carolina Amateur champion competed on eGolf Tour Florida over the past two months, winning both the Lee Westwood Golf School Open and Stonegate Classic, in turn marking the first two victories of his professional career.
Adams and Varner were two of 14 eGolf Tour players to advance to PGA West through Southern Hills Plantation, alongside notables such as medalist Matt Ryan of Santa Clarita, CA and Jeff Curl of Birmingham, AL – both three-time eGolf Tour winners.
The trip to final stage is Ryan’s first after four years of competing full-time on the eGolf Tour. The former Fresno State product has one win in each of his last three seasons on tour, most recently claiming the Columbia Classic in September of this year.
Chris Epperson of Hilton Head Island, SC, arguably the best player in eGolf Tour history without a victory, is at Q-School finals for the second time in his career. The 31-year-old finished sixth on the tour’s season-ending money list, thanks in part to six top-5 finishes. Epperson opened his year with four straight top-4 efforts, eventually posting two runner-ups on the season at both the Championship at Ballantyne Country Club and the River Hills Classic.
The former Armstrong Atlantic State golfer competed on the newly-formed PGA TOUR Canada this summer, collecting six top-10 finishes on his way to an eighth-place finish on the money list. That finish gave Epperson a direct ticket to final stage, where he will secure some form of Web.com Tour status for the second time in three years.

Two-time Canadian Amateur champion Cam Burke of New Hamburg, Ontario finished ninth on the eGolf Tour money list this year with 15 top-25 finishes, including his first professional win at the Founders Club Classic in April.
The affable Charlotte, NC resident finished eighth at Shell Landing Golf Club in Mississippi to punch his ticket to final stage, where he is making his first career appearance.
Other eGolf Tour players of note at final stage include former U.S. Walker Cup team members Matt Hendrix, Adam Mitchell and Blayne Barber, as well as three-time eGolf Tour winner Chris Thompson and longtime Web.com Tour member Tim O’Neal.
O’Neal, who has a well-documented history of Q-School heartbreak, most notably at PGA West, resurrected his career in 2012 while competing in Morocco as an eGolf Tour Ambassador to the North African country. The Savannah, GA native won three times overseas early last year, in turn earning an exemption into the European Tour’s Trophee Hassan II.
The 41-year-old won twice on PGA TOUR Latinoamerica this past year, eventually finishing third on the season-ending money list to secure conditional status on the 2014 Web.com Tour. O’Neal is at final stage to try and improve on his existing status number for next season.
