Scottsdale, AZ – Kevin Spooner of British Columbia, Canada won the eGolf Gateway Tour’s final fall series event at McCormick Ranch Golf Club in wire-to-wire fashion on Thursday, closing his week with a 2-under 70 and a 15-under par total – good for a dominant three-shot win and the event’s $10,000 first-place prize.

Spooner’s week on the Palm Course at McCormick Ranch began in ideal fashion, with rounds of 63-68—131 (13-under) delivering the 18- and 36-hole leads heading into Thursday’s third and final round.

Starting the day two clear of Ben Kern of Scottsdale, Ariz., Spooner looked solid early on with birdies on Nos. 6 and 7 to reach 17-under par - three clear of the field.

On the par-4 ninth, the former University of Washington golfer briefly came unraveled with a double-bogey that left him at even-par on the turn, and just two ahead of Kern – who bogeyed No. 9 to turn in 36 as well.

Early on the back nine, however, it was Kern’s turn to slip up, as three bogeys in his opening four holes opened the door for Spooner to cruise towards a second career win in the desert.

When the Husky birdied 16 and 17 to move to 2-under for the day, the par-4 18th became a mere formality between Spooner and the win. A closing par at the last gave him a final-round 70, a 15-under par total and his first eGolf Gateway Tour win since a victory at Wigwam Resort this past February.

Spooner, 25, entered the week with three top-15 finishes to his name thus far in the 2014 fall series, including a T8 at Moon Valley last month.

Former Air Force Academy star Tom Whitney of Fort Collins, Colo. finished in solo-second place at 12-under 204 – three shots back of Spooner. He earned $6,000 for the week.

Whitney, who claimed career win No. 1 at eGolf’s Avondale Open this past May, birdied Nos. 5, 6, 7, 9, 10 and 12 on Thursday to reach 5-under for the day and 12-under overall, but pared his final six holes for a closing 67.

Whitney won four college tournaments and set four various school-scoring records during his tenure as arguably the Falcons’ all-time best player. After competing in both the 2009 U.S. Amateur and U.S. Amateur Public Links Championship, he turned professional in 2010, competing in two to three events annually while on active duty. The Lake Tahoe, Calif. native finished active duty with the Air Force in May of this year after serving in the 319th Missile Squadron at FE Warren Air Force Base in Wyoming.

Kern wound up with a final-round 72 and an 11-under 205 total – good for a solo-third-place finish and $4,200.

eGolf Gateway Tour’s west coast winter series will kick off on January 12, 2015 with a sponsorship event at Papago Golf Club in Phoenix, Ariz.

The winter series, which will feature guaranteed minimum purses of $100,000 or $75,000 at each event, will begin on January 16-18, 2015 at Papago.
