San Antonio, TX – Former eGolf Tour winner Billy Horschel continued his strong play over the weekend at the PGA TOUR’s Valero Texas Open, posting rounds of 68-68-70-71—277 (11-under) to finish T3, just one week after earning a career-best, T2 finish at the Shell Houston Open.
Horschel, who won the eGolf Tour’s Columbia Open in August of 2009, entered the week in San Antonio on the heels of a standout performance down the road in Houston, where a final-round 66 left him one-shot shy of winner D.A. Points.
Playing the AT&T; Oaks Course at host TPC San Antonio, Horschel marched out to the tournament’s 36-hole lead after opening with rounds of 68-68—136 (8-under par) to grab a two-shot advantage at the event’s halfway point.
On Saturday, the former Florida Gator star posted a 2-under 70, in turn pushing his 54-hole tally to 10-under par with just 18 holes to play – two shots clear of Sunday playing partners Jim Furyk and Charley Hoffman.
Horschel, who said after the round that he hit the ball poorly on the front nine, fell behind early in the final round with an even-par 36 on his opening nine that kept him at 10-under par, at the time one back of a surging Martin Laird – who birdied six of his first 12 holes to reach 11-under par.
Horschel dropped to 9-under par with a bogey at the downhill par-3 13th, taking himself out of tournament contention as Laird stepped on the gas down the stretch, posting birdies at 16, 17 and 18 to post a tournament-winning 14-under 274 total.
Daniel SummerhaysEver the competitor, Horschel carded late birdies at Nos. 15 and 18 to rally back into a tie for third, posting a final-round 71 to finish the week at 11-under – three shots back of Laird.
“It's satisfying that I had a chance to win, but at this point – I mean, I hit it awful on the first nine holes. I mean, there was no wind, and I had to take advantage of it, and I didn't do a very good job of it,” said a dejected Horschel after the round. “I hit it very pathetic in my mind, sort of what it was like in Florida a little bit. And it was disappointing, very disappointing.”
The finish was worth $322,400 for the Grant, FL native, who now has over $1.25 million in 2013 earnings. The week also marked the 21st consecutive cut made for Horschel, who currently leads the PGA TOUR in that category.
Former eGolf Tour player Daniel Summerhays finished T7 in San Antonio, posting rounds of 69-69-73-69—280 to earn his first top-10 since a fifth-place finish at the Greenbrier Classic last July.
Summerhays, who finished T6 at the eGolf Tour’s Cowans Ford Open in 2010, opened the week with rounds of 69-69—138 to trail Horschel by two entering the weekend. On Saturday, the former BYU star bogeyed four of his first 10 holes to fall to 2-over for the round, eventually finishing with a 1-over 73 for the day.
On Sunday, Summerhays was even par through 15 holes before ending with a tear, posting birdies on 16, 17 and 18 to finish off a final-round 69, which left him at T7 – where he originally began the round.
Other eGolf Tour players to make the cut in San Antonio include Martin Flores (T10), Kevin Chappell (T15), Jason Kokrak (T15), Brendon de Jonge (T22), Brian Harman (T22), John Mallinger (T29), Steve LeBrun (T37), Brad Fritsch (T37), William McGirt (T37), Matt Bettencourt (T46), Luke List (T46), Scott Stallings (T53), Henrik Norlander (T53), Brendon Todd (T61), Russell Knox (T69) and Matt Every (MDF). • At the Web.com Tour’s inaugural Brasil Classic presented by HSBC, former eGolf Tour player Dawie Van der Walt of South Africa posted rounds of 69-66-65-66—266 (18-under par) en route to a runner-up finish – his second in the last year. The former Lamar University standout entered Sunday’s final round in a tie for third, trailing eventual winner Benjamin Alvarado by four shots, having reached 13-under 200 through three rounds of play. The Paarl, South Africa native played brilliantly on Sunday, carding five birdies against zero bogeys for a final-round 66 that locked up solo-second-place honors, finishing one shot shy of Alvarado – who birdied the 71st hole to seal the victory. The finish matched his prior career-best on the PGA TOUR’s developmental circuit, posted at the Cox Classic last summer. Former eGolf Tour player Kevin Tway earned a career-best, fourth-place finish in his first Web.com Tour start of the year, carding rounds of 67-69-66-66—268 (16-under) to sit three shots behind Alvarado after 72 holes. Past eGolf Tour member Wes Roach, who held a share of the 18-hole lead at the eGolf Tour’s season-opening Palmetto Hall Championship, rode a third-round 63 to a career-best, fifth-place finish – winding up at 15-under for the week. Roach, who finished 91st on the tour’s money list last year, will likely improve his conditional status standing thanks to the finish. Other eGolf Tour players to make the cut in Sao Paulo, Brazil include Brett Stegmaier (T6), Brice Garnett (T6), Aron Price (14), Philippe Gasnier (T15), Tommy Cocha (T37), Lee Bedford (T37), Richard Scott (T37), Matt Hill (T37), Scott Harrington (T47), Fernando Mechereffe (T47), Andres Echavarria (T52), Dustin Garza (T52), Stephan Jaeger (T60), Camilo Benedetti (T60), Erik Flores (70) and Matias O’Curry (74).
