Brothers Carlos and Michael Sainz Post Hole-in-One and Double-Eagle, Respectively, in Opening Round of eGolf Tour Event

Charlotte, NC – In Wednesday’s opening round of the eGolf Tour’s inaugural Palisades Classic, two of the rarest feats in golf were accomplished as separate players recorded a hole-in-one and a double eagle on the Jack Nicklaus-designed Palisades Country Club layout. Even rarer than that was the fact that the two competitors – Carlos and Michael Sainz of Elgin, IL – were brothers.
The first player to put his name in the hat for family bragging rights was Carlos, who competed in the opening round’s morning wave, and arrived at the tee of the par-3 13th at even-par for the day.
With a 7-iron from 170 yards, Carlos – Michael’s older brother – recorded his second career hole-in-one, and his first in tournament play, to vault to 2-under for the day, where he eventually finished for a first-round 70.
“I kept wondering when I would make one in competition, so it was pretty cool to finally do that,” Carlos said after his round.
Approximately five-and-a-half hours later, Michael – making just his second start as a professional – arrived at the tee of the 502-yard par-5 12th, and laced his tee shot around the corner of the dogleg-left hole, roughly 385 yards.
With just 117 yards to go on the downwind par-5, the younger Sainz brother hit a flawless pitching wedge that found the bottom of the cup for a double eagle. Like Carlos, Michael also wound up at 2-under 70 for the round, putting both brothers in a tie for 28th after day one.
“We were eating dinner with our host family, and I told him when he showed up that I made a hole-in-one earlier in the day,” said Carlos, still elated at the rare double. “He sat there for a bit, then said, ‘Sometimes, a hole-in-one just isn’t good enough. I made a double eagle today.’”
By his own account, the 27-year-old elder Sainz was ecstatic at the unbelievable feat the two brothers had achieved on the same day, calling his father to celebrate.
“I was so happy for him,” he said. “This being just his second event as a professional, I really was hoping he’d play well, so for him to make a double eagle on a day in which I made a hole-in-one – that was just awesome.”
While there are no exact odds given for a hole-in-one or double eagle, common thought according to many outlets is that the former has a 25,000-to-1 chance of occurring, while the latter sits at a lofty 6-million-to-1.
Couple those numbers with the odds of two siblings achieving each feat on the same course and during the same tournament round, and the likelihood is arguably immeasurable.
While nearly impossible to calculate and/or research throughout the history of tournament golf, it is quite possibly the first time two brothers have ever posted a hole-in-one and double eagle in the same professional round.
The second round of the Palisades Classic began at 7:30 AM on Thursday morning. The projected 36-hole cut was 4-under 140, putting both Sainz brothers squarely on the cut line entering the round.
