Salisbury, NC – At the eGolf Tour’s season-ending Salisbury Classic, Mother Nature was the headline on day one as constant morning rain forced officials to suspend play from 1:53 PM to 4:00 PM due to saturated conditions that made the host Country Club of Salisbury course unplayable. Play was suspended for the day at 6:15 PM due to additional rain and darkness. At day’s end, only half the field was able to complete 18 holes of play, while the rest of the field will resume play at 8:50 AM on Wednesday morning.
The Salisbury Classic is the 17th and final event of the 2011 eGolf Tour season and is being contested this week at the Country Club of Salisbury in Salisbury, NC.
Of the players who completed 18 holes, Corey Nagy of Charlotte, NC and Jhared Hack of Sanford, FL are the un-official co-leaders after posting opening rounds of 6-under 65 on Wednesday.
Nagy, a two-time winner on the eGolf Tour this year, began his round in steady rain on the back nine at the Country Club of Salisbury with a birdie at the par-4 10th, and follow-up birdies on 13, 15 and 18 to turn at 4-under 32. On the front nine (his back), Nagy birdied Nos. 2, 3 and 5 to move to 7-under on his day, but suffered his only bogey at the short par-4 eighth to fall to 6-under, where he finished for his 65.
The round was Nagy’s fourth round of 65 or better on the year. At the Bolle Classic in June, part of which was contested at the Country Club of Salisbury, Nagy closed with rounds of 62-63 to notch his second win of the 2011. His first win came via a playoff victory over Brian Harman at the season-opening Swiftwick Shootout at Palmetto Hall.
A four-time “All America” selection at nearby UNC Charlotte, Nagy has solidified himself as on the eGolf Tour’s up-and-coming stars in his first full season with the two wins, two T8 finishes, and nearly $75,000 in single-season earnings. He has also notched three starts on the Nationwide Tour this year, with a T22 at the Chiquita Classic in July being his best finish.
Jhared Hack
Hack, a former Western Amateur champion and two-time eGolf Tour winner, bogeyed the par-4 second in his opening round, but rallied with birdies on Nos. 3 through 6 to turn at 3-under 32. On the back nine, the former University of Central Florida star posted birdies at 10 and 13, as well as an eagle at the par-5 15th en route to a closing 3-under 33.
The 65 was Hack’s lowest round on the eGolf Tour since closing with a 6-under 65 at the 2010 Southern Open to capture his second career tour title.
In 2011, Hack opened the year with eight missed cuts in his first nine starts before taking a hiatus from the eGolf Tour following the Cowans Ford Open in June. Hack spent the next few months playing events in his native Florida before returning for this week’s Salisbury Classic.
Matthew Ryan, Jerry Richardson and Brad Hopfinger are tied for third after opening with rounds of 4-under 67.
Ryan, a native of Santa Clarita, CA, won his first career eGolf Tour title at the Bushnell Classic two weeks ago in Gordonsville, VA. The former Fresno State standout is currently leading the tour’s “Road to Morocco” points race, where the winner will earn an exemption into the European Tour’s 2012 King Hassan II Trophy next spring.
The Road to Morocco will come to a conclusion with this week’s event, after players accumulated points at the Cabarrus Classic and Bushnell Classic in September. Ryan currently holds a 500-point lead over Cabarrus Classic winner Ryan Nelson of Houston, TX. Nelson carded a 3-over 74 in the opening round.
First-round play in the Salisbury Classic will resume at 8:50 AM on Wednesday morning. Second-round tee times will be on a two-hour and 40-minute delay, with the first tee time at 11:00 AM. The tournament is open to the public and free of charge.
