Gordonsville, VA – With the eyes of the golf world focused squarely on Merion Golf Club and the 113th playing of the United States Open, some of the game’s top up-and-coming players will descend on central Virginia for the eGolf Tour’s sixth annual Spring Creek Classic, to be contested at award-winning Spring Creek Golf Club on June 12-14, 2013.
The tournament will mark the tour's eighth trip to Spring Creek Golf Club, dating back to the event's 2007 edition and inclusive of two eGolf Tour Championships during that stretch. The event has proved to be a springboard for success, with past champion Roberto Castro (2007, 2009) currently starring on the PGA TOUR, and winners Michael Sims (2008) and Matt Davidson (2008 Tour Championship) competing full-time on the Web.com Tour. Former Sony Open sensation Tadd Fujikawa won the tour's 2010 Tour Championship for his lone eGolf Tour title, while roommates Matt Ryan (2011) and Seamus Power (2012) have claimed the last two Spring Creek Classic trophies.
The par-4 11th at Spring Creek Golf ClubWhile the tour provides the players, the golf course provides the stunning arena that makes the Spring Creek Classic annually one of the top stops on the 24-event eGolf Tour season. The Ed Carton-designed course at Spring Creek opened to rave reviews in 2006 and was awarded Golf Digest's prestigious "Best New Course" honor in 2007. The phenomenal venue carves a veritable trail of perfection out of the tree-lined Virginia countryside, with wall-to-wall bent grass conditions providing a stark contrast between the lush green hues of the fairways and the towering hardwoods protecting them.
"The golf course is the real star of our week at Spring Creek," said eGolf Tour president David Siegel. "It is without doubt the most immaculate venue we play each year in terms of conditioning, and the layout itself is more than PGA TOUR worthy. We pride ourselves on playing the industry’s top venues, so to put Spring Creek at the top of our own list is added testament to the course’s reputation, which is more than upheld during tournament week.”
Awards earned by Spring Creek since the club’s opening in 2006 include:
• Golf Digest “Best New Affordable Public Course in the United States” in 2007
• Golf Digest No. 58 “America's Greatest Public Courses” in 2013
• Golf World “Readers Choice Award” No. 12, Top 50 Public Golf Courses in 2010
• Golf Digest “Top 100 Public Golf Courses” in 2011 – Ranked No. 70
• Golfweek “Readers Choice Award” – No. 2 Best Conditioned Public Course
• Golfweek “Top 100 Residential Golf Course” in 2010
• Golfweek “No. 1 Residential Public Course in Virginia” in 2012
A host of the eGolf Tour’s top players are in the field at Spring Creek. Featured players in the field include:
Drew Weaver (High Point, NC)
Former Virginia Tech star and 2007 British Amateur champion led the 2012 eGolf Tour money list with earnings of $121,737, thanks in part to two wins and nine additional top-5 finishes. Weaver finished T2 at the Columbia Open in May of 2012, then notched two wins (Willow Creek Open / Southern Open) and three more runner-ups during a six-tournament stretch that vaulted him past the $100,000 mark in single-season earnings - the fastest player in tour history to reach that milestone. One of those runner-ups came at Spring Creek, where he finished in solo-second place, five shots back of Power. Weaver has made 8 of 11 cuts thus far in 2013, posting a season-best T5 at the Irish Creek Classic in March.
Jin Jeong (Melbourne, Australia)
Korean-born amateur star became the first Asian player to win the British Amateur when he did so in 2010. That same summer, Jeong notched low amateur honors at the British Open following rounds of 68-70-74-72--282 and a T14 finish. Missed the cut at the 2011 Masters Tournament prior to turning professional, then made three more starts on the PGA TOUR at the Valero Texas Open, The Memorial Tournament and the Greenbrier Classic. Jeong finished runner-up to Drew Weaver in his maiden eGolf Tour start at the Willow Creek Open in May of 2012. Spring Creek will mark his fourth eGolf Tour start of the 2013 season. Seamus Power
Seamus Power (West Waterford, Ireland)
Those looking for a favorite at Spring Creek need look no further than the defending champion. Power, who posted rounds of 67-64-66—197 en route to a commanding five-shot win at last year’s event, has yet to win in 2013, but has been a study in consistency, recording seven top-25 finishes in nine starts – including two runner-up efforts in his last three starts. The former East Tennessee State star finished T2 at the Columbia Open in May, then followed it up three weeks later with a solo-second-place finish at the Willow Creek Open. Power is currently sixth on the tour’s money list with just over $28,000 in season-long earnings.
Ryan Armour (Jupiter, FL)
The 37-year-old former Ohio State star spent 2007 and 2008 on the PGA TOUR, and has been a six-year Web.com Tour member dating back to the 2004 season. The Akron, OH native has four career runner-up finishes on the Web.com Tour, with a T2 at the 2012 Panama Claro Championship serving as his most recent. Armour might best be known for the 1993 U.S. Junior Amateur, where he had Tiger Woods two down with two to play at host Eugene Country Club in Portland, Oregon, prior to losing 1-down on the 19th hole as the eventual 14-time major championship winner rallied to win the final three holes. The win marked the third consecutive U.S. Junior title for Woods, which preceded three straight U.S. Amateur titles for the longtime world No. 1. Spring Creek will mark his fourth consecutive start on the eGolf Tour.
Other players of note in the field at Spring Creek include 2013 winners Bryce Ledford of Chattanooga, TN (Championship at St. James), Cam Burke of Ontario, Canada (Founders Club Classic), T.J. Howe of Osceola, PA (Forest Oaks Classic), Tanner Ervin of Mt. Pleasant, SC (Columbia Open), Andy Bare of West End, NC (Palisades Classic) and Mitch Krywulycz of Australia (Sedgefield Classic).
