Ponte Vedra Beach, FL – At the PGA TOUR’s prestigious PLAYERS Championship, three former eGolf Tour players – Blake Adams, Brendon de Jonge and David Mathis – posted top-15 finishes to lead the way for the tour’s alums at TPC Sawgrass.
Adams, winner of the eGolf Tour’s 2008 Columbia Open, opened his week on the famed TPC Sawgrass Stadium course with eight birdies – including five in a row on Nos. 5 through 9 – to post a first-round 66 and grab the early Thursday afternoon lead. The fast start put Adams in a tie for third through 18 holes, trailing only co-leaders Ian Poulter and Martin Laird, who each posted a 7-under 65 to start.
Follow-up rounds of 73-72 left the former Georgia Southern golfer at 5-under 211 and in a tie for 10th entering Sunday’s final round, where a closing 71 left Adams at T12 on the week.
The finish was just the second top-25 for Adams on the year, and brought his earnings up to $400,934 – good for No. 102 on the PGA TOUR money list.
Former eGolf Tour player Brendon de Jonge and three-time eGolf Tour winner David Mathis posted 5-under 283 totals to finish T15 on the week.
De Jonge, a native of Zimbabwe now living in Charlotte, NC, carded rounds of 69-71-72-71—283 to post his fourth top-25 of the 2012 season. The week marked his sixth consecutive made cut on the PGA TOUR, dating back to the Shell Houston Open the first week of April.
For Mathis, a return to TPC Sawgrass brought forth a wave of good memories, as the former Nationwide Tour player flashed back to a torrid finish during the 2010 season. During that life-changing year on the PGA TOUR’s minor-league circuit, Mathis posted two top-5s in his last four starts to secure his TOUR card for the 2011 year, where he has been a full member ever since. The second of those two top-5 finishes came at the Winn-Dixie Jacksonville Open, where Mathis carded rounds of 68-63-72-69—272 to win his first Nationwide Tour title and solidify his spot inside the tour’s coveted top 25 on the season-ending money list (he finished the year 13th on the money list). That event was contested on Dye’s Valley course at TPC Sawgrass – the facility’s sister course to the more famous Stadium course used for THE PLAYERS Championship.
Mathis entered Sunday’s final round at THE PLAYERS in a tie for 14th following rounds of 72-71-69—212. At 4-under par starting the day, the former Campbell University golfer birdied four of his first 13 holes to move to 3-under on his round and 7-under for the week. Flirting with a top-10 in his first start at the PGA TOUR’s “fifth major,” Mathis wound up carding a 1-under 71 on the day when bogeys on 14 and 17 dropped him two shots back off of his hot start. The finish was Mathis’ third top-20 in his last four starts on TOUR – a stretch that followed a difficult 1-for-11 start to his year in terms of cuts made.
Other eGolf Tour players to make the cut at TPC Sawgrass include Keegan Bradley (T35), Tom Gillis (T35), Kris Blanks (T40), Josh Teater (T46), Brian Harman (T51), Chris Kirk (T51), Michael Thompson (T51) and Cameron Tringale (72).
